The Town of Bel Air, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary and recently hosted the second annual Bel Air Town Derby featuring 20 youth drivers -- as well as a massive July 4 celebration -- has been named the Best Suburb in the Baltimore region.

The honor was bestowed by readers of The Baltimore Sun who participated in the newspaper's Best 2024 Readers' Choice contest. Readers could make their choices online in a host of categories, making their top picks for local schools, radio DJs, hairstylists, banks, podcasters, social media influencers, even the best player on the Baltimore Orioles (infielder Gunnar Henderson) and on the Baltimore Ravens (kicker Justin Tucker). All told, readers could make selections among close to 200 categories with six major areas -- Arts & Activities, Home & Garden, Food & Drink, Lifestyles & Shopping, Personal Services and People & Media.

The full list of winners and honorable mentions can be viewed on The Sun's website. The Best Suburb category is in the area of Arts and Activities. Bel Air came out ahead of Towson, Lutherville-Timonium and Parkville, all in Baltimore County. A number of businesses and institutions in and around Bel Air also were named winners or received honorable mentions.
